Toto
An American music group. The group was formed in California in 1977. The collective managed to organically combine progressive rock, rhythm and blues, and hard rock, a fusion of which was presented on the debut album titled Toto, as well as to master directions such as soul, funk, and jazz. Toto's peak popularity was in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The composition 'Hold the Line' from the debut record became the band's first commercially successful single, and in 1982 the most successful album in this regard, Toto IV, was released, thanks to which the group was nominated for a Grammy in the 'Best New Artist' category. Toto received Grammys in the 'Album of the Year' and 'Record of the Year' categories, and songs from Toto IV—'Africa' and 'Rosanna'—reigned on the airwaves of American radio stations for a long time. The record became 'triple platinum' in the USA and 'gold' in the UK. Subsequent releases of the group could not repeat this success. The Toto collective also wrote music that was included in the soundtrack for David Lynch's film 'Dune' (1984). In 2009, the group was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame.
